“The Walls” which is a Featured Exhibition of the Scotiabank CONTACT Photography Festival. A new book on Kiarostami’s new series photographs titled “The Walls” by Paris based celebrated writer Youssef Ishaghpour will accompany Kiarostami’s exhibition at Pari Nadimi Gallery.
The Walls is a new series of photographs by internationally acclaimed Iranian film director, poet, and photographer Abbas Kiarostami. These images are portraits taken of walls from houses that were built in Iran. With surfaces that are parched, cracked, fractured, blistered, and marred— each wall evokes the passage of time. The shifting effects of nature suggest how life is delicate and fleeting, as interstices of shadow and light reflect impermanent movements and intertwined networks. While walls are typically built to obscure and block the landscape, here they become a ground for reflecting subtle changes in life, and the impermanence of human existence. At the same time, these walls also occupy the role of “figure” with their individuality on display, revealing itself to the camera. The details found in each image—dark holes, rusted pipes, gutters, cracks, and graffiti—are evidence of human presence, which is now highlighted as an absence. In these photographs an everyday setting is imbued with meditative essence, which is an ongoing preoccupation within Kiarostami’s practice. Through the delicate interplay between foreground and background, his work connects the manmade environment with nature. Abbas Kiarostami (born 1940) is an internationally acclaimed Iranian film director and screenwriter. An active filmmaker since 1970, Kiarostami has been involved in over forty films, including shorts and documentaries, and attained critical acclaim for directing the Koker trilogy, A Taste of Cherry and The Wind Will Carry Us. Kiarostami is also a noted Photographer and poet. A bilingual collection of more than 200 of his poems, Walking with the Wind, was published by Harvard University Press. His photographic work includes Untitled Photographs, a collection of over thirty photographs, essentially of snow landscapes, taken in his hometown Tehran, between 1978 and 2003. An exhibition of Kiarostami's photographs of roads, trees and views from a car were shown at PS1 Contemporary Art Center in New York in 2007. Premiered at the Museum of Modern Art and P.S.1 in New York on March 1, 2007, Abbas Kiarostami: Image Maker comprised 33 short and feature films, two media installation works, and a comprehensive exhibition of photographs featuring selections from Snow White (1978-2003) and Roads (1978-2003), Rain (2006) and Trees and Crows (2006) as well as the installation Summer Afternoon (2006). Abbas Kiarostami: Image Maker traveled to the University of California Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive on July 8 and the Los Angeles County Museum in Fall 2007. In November 2007, Southeast Museum of Photography hosted an extensive exhibition of Abbas Kiarostami's four photographic series. Kiarostami’s photographic and video works included in major international private and public collections. In the last few years, Kiarostami’s photographs have been commanding high prices in the Christie’s and Sotheby’s contemporary Art Auctions, just recently one of his major video installations was purchased by Louis Vuitton Museum.
